![]() ![]() DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11235-011-9625-y Abstract This work proposes the implementation of a robust absolute virtual head mouse based on the interpretation of head movements and face gestures captured with a frontal camera. The procedure combines face detection, template matching and optical flow algorithms to emulate all mouse events. This virtual device is designed specifically as an alternative non-contact pointer for people with mobility impairments in the upper extremities. The implementation of the virtual mouse was compared with a standard mouse, a touchpad and a joystick. Validation results show motion performances comparable to those of a standard mouse and better than those of a joystick in addition to good performances when detecting face gestures to generate click events: 96% success in the case of opening the mouth and 68% in the case of voluntary eye blinks. |

VAEP-RITA es Open Access: Link de la revista Abstract: This work describes a learning case developed in the University of Lleida, Spain. This proposal is addressed to third course engineering students that must combine knowledge from artificial vision and robotic control to complete an automation task. The objective is the detection of a small object placed randomly on a surface to recollect and store it with a robotic arm. The educational results of this experience have shown that the development of a learning case based on the combination of artificial vision and robotics increases the motivation of the students and improve the assimilation of theoretical concepts. |

Palacin, Measuring Yarn Diameter Using Fast and Inexpensive Optical Sensors, International Journal of Sensors Wireless Communications and Control, 2 (2012), 157-167. Link to the Journal (online) Abstract: In this paper, the inexpensive optical sensor of a common computer mouse is proposed as a tool to measure the yarn diameter. In the textile industry this measurement tool has many applications in quality control and assurance. This optical sensor operates in combination with a plastic lens and an external LED to complete an inexpensive and compact vision system. The optical sensor includes a fast optical monochrome imaging device of 30x30 pixels and an internal processing unit originally programmed to measure displacement in the images acquired. The imaging device can operate at very high frame rates and the image acquired can be accessed externally to develop new low-cost and real-time monitoring applications such as the measurement of yarn diameters. |
